first snow

On my morning walk to the bus stop, tiny flurries drifted down from the sky. My first snowfall here in Korea. It's funny how something so deliciously exciting can be so bittersweet. During the school day, we received a little more than flurries. It really started snowing and I couldn't help but jump with glee along with my students. My co-teacher must've thought me incredibly immature, but I was just as excited as my adorable first graders. One charmer, Evan by name, leaned over to his buddy and said (in Korean, of course), "You're supposed to spend the first snowfall with your girlfriend." I couldn't help but smirk at the cutie.pa.tootie as he looked up at me bashfully, quickly remembering that I could understand his mother tongue.

Students really do bring you down to earth. You can't think of yourself so high and mighty when they're mocking you, rolling their eyes at you, scoffing at you, teasing you... Even when they say something seemingly nice, there's a bit of sourness in there as well. I overheard one of my girls say to her friends, "I'd rather look like Linda teacher than be pretty." Why thank you, Ella.

your post reminded me of the time when we were on our way to work and got all the way into china town and called into work for a parking spot and found out the office was CLOSED. that was such a joyous day, like snow...sigh

I always seem to spend my first snowfalls alone or with another girl, and we're both wishing to have boyfriends or something like that.

snow is overrated!! the only reason we have snow is because the earth is tilted at an angle. don't sweat it, linda ;)

also, more than pretty, i think you're attractive. like a magnet for interesting people.
